Texas State University's construction programs are integrating advanced surveying and digital technologies into their curricula through a partnership with Leica Geosystems, a division of Hexagon.
The agreement affects approximately 1,100 undergraduate students enrolled in the Construction Science and Management and Concrete Industry Management programs. Students will gain access to robotic total stations, Global Navigation Satellite System equipment, laser scanners, and digital layout solutions previously unavailable for classroom instruction.
Ryan Penlerick, professor of practice and director of the construction and concrete programs at Texas State, explained that modern construction projects increasingly depend on automated positioning technologies and integrated digital workflows. While traditional surveying methods remain foundational, he said, current industry practice relies heavily on robotic total stations, GNSS technology, laser scanning, and positioning systems that graduates will encounter immediately in their careers.
Leica Geosystems will provide both equipment and industry expertise to the programs. Anthony Paturzo, vice president and general manager of the GMAT Construction Division for Leica Geosystems in the U.S. and Canada, said the partnership bridges the gap between classroom instruction and jobsite application, giving graduates skills and confidence to contribute from their first day of employment.
The programs have experienced sustained enrollment growth in recent years while expanding partnerships with industry leaders. Both the Construction Science and Management program and the Concrete Industry Management program serve students preparing for careers across commercial, industrial, infrastructure, and concrete construction sectors.
The curriculum enhancements will introduce students to technologies that support increasingly digital project delivery methods. By working with industry-standard equipment during their studies, graduates will be better positioned to support modern construction practices in their professional roles.
Texas State has emphasized experiential learning and industry engagement as central to its construction education approach. The partnership represents a continuation of that commitment, connecting classroom learning directly to tools and practices used on active construction projects.
